How long does it take to recover from Lasik surgery?

If you suffer from a refractive eye disorder and you are tired of keeping track of your eyeglasses or contact lenses, ask your ophthalmologist about LASIK surgery. LASIK surgery is safe and predictable, takes about 15 minutes to perform, and recovery time is minimal. But how long does it take to recover from LASIK surgery? It all depends.

LASIK surgery
Laser vision correction is a convenient option for individuals who want to go without corrective eyewear. It is generally done to reshape the cornea and improve eyesight.

Recovery
Immediately after Lasik surgery patients are given protective eyewear such as eye shields, in order to safeguard the eyes. These are generally worn for up to 5 days after surgery.

A follow-up visit is generally required within 48 hours of the operation, to ensure that the eye is healing as expected. Patients can usually resume work a few days after surgery.

Symptoms such as mild itching, discomfort, and burning are not uncommon, but these normally clear up quickly. However, patients are advised not to rub the eyes, as this could cause complications with the cornea.

Patients are usually given antibiotic and lubricating eye drops that must be used as instructed. It is very important to keep the eyes lubricated during this period.

After LASIK surgery the eyes are generally more sensitive to sunlight, therefore sunglasses are recommended.
