Apps to improve quality of life for people with Low Vision

Millions of Americans suffer from low vision, and experience a diminished quality of life because of it.  The condition often makes it difficult for them to see faces clearly, and they are also unable to enjoy simple activities such as writing and driving. However, there are now several apps available, which can be used to improve quality of life for people with low vision.

Individuals with low vision are unable to see clearly, even with the aid of corrective lenses. They often develop low vision as a side-effect of conditions such as macular degeneration, and retinopathy, but technology has come to their rescue. Devices such as smartphones and tablets are fitted with apps they can use to enhance their lives. These include:

  • Voice Control: Both the iPhone and iPad have options in this regard. The iPhone’s Siri is a voice recognition software that allows users to speak commands. That means people with low vision don’t have to type in any information, because Siri responds to voice commands to search, make calls, and more.

  • Text Magnification: For low vision sufferers who would still like to read, help is available in the form of text magnification apps. The text magnification app on smartphones and tablets allows them to increase text size, and read comfortably.

  • Light enhancement: The ability to adjust the light is a feature on most smartphones and tablets, making it possible for people with low vision to view text.

These are some of the apps that are helping to improve the quality of life for people with low vision, making it easier for them to negotiate through life.
