Can Spider Veins Be Removed?

If you have spider veins then you already know they can be frustrating to deal with. Although spider veins are usually harmless, they can sometimes cause aches and pains and other health problems. But can spider veins be removed.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are tiny, web-like veins that most often appear on the face, legs, and feet. Spider veins on the legs occur because of damage to the one-way valves in the veins, but spider veins on the face are typically the result of broken capillaries. Spider veins on the face are very common in people with sensitive skin.

Can spider veins be removed?

Yes. There are several options for removing spider veins including sclerotherapy and laser therapy. Both treatments can provide very good results with minimal downtime.

• Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is typically used to treat large spider veins. It involves injecting the damaged vein with a sclerosing agent that irritates the vein, causing it to scar and seal shut. Some veins may require more than one treatment to achieve the desired result.

• Laser treatment for spider veins
Laser treatment is an effective option for smaller spider veins that are not suitable for sclerotherapy, especially those on the face. The laser energy penetrates the skin and the heat generated seals the blood vessel, so it is no longer able to transport blood. The treated vein will eventually disappear from view.

Patients are generally required to wear a compression garment for at least 2 days after treatment, to help minimize swelling.
