Acne is a common skin condition, especially among the teenage population, and acne scars are an unfortunate side effect. In fact, acne scars can sometimes be the source of psychological distress, for teens and young adults already struggling with issues of poor self-esteem. So it’s not surprising that they are always anxious to find out ‘How can I effectively treat acne scars.’
How to effectively treat acne scars
There are several treatments that are very effective for acne scars, but the right one for you, will depend on the type of scars you have. The most common type of acne scars are ice pick scars, rolling scars, and boxcar scars.
Ice pick scars are narrow and form pits in the skin, rolling scars are indented and wide and shallow in shape, while boxcar scars create a depression in the skin.
Modalities such as dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing, and the CROSS technique, can all be used to treat acne scars.
- Dermal Fillers can be used to temporarily fill in depressed scars, particularly rolling scars. A very fine needle is used to inject the dermal filler, usually Restylane or Juvederm, into the specific acne scars.
- Laser Skin Resurfacing using certain lasers such as the fractional CO2 laser and the Fraxel laser, are able to treat boxcar scars.
- The CROSS (Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars) technique is a very effective solution for ice pick scars. It involves the application of a chemical solution deep into the scar tissue. Multiple treatments are required for best results.
