If you would like to firm and flatten your tummy, a tummy tuck is an ideal solution. A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure in which the extra skin and fat is removed from the abdominal area, and the muscles are tightened. During a tummy tuck consultation one of the questions patients frequently ask is – how much downtime is required for a tummy tuck?
What to expect after tummy tuck surgery
Patients are generally required to stay overnight in the hospital after tummy tuck surgery. They can expect to feel very sore the following day and may have difficulty standing straight, due to the extra tension caused by the tightening of the skin and muscles. However, patients are encouraged to take short walks to help blood circulation.
A compression garment is worn to help minimize swelling and assist with healing. Surgical drains are also fitted to collect fluid that drains from the surgical site, and are usually removed within one week.
Swelling and bruising is normal after surgery. Most of the swelling will resolve within 6 weeks of the operation, but any residual swelling will disappear over subsequent weeks.
How Much Downtime is required for a Tummy Tuck?
Downtime after tummy tuck surgery ranges from 1-2 weeks, but it does vary between patients. Patients that have a physically demanding job may need to take more time off work.
Most patients are fully recovered at about the 6 week mark, and are able to resume normal activities.
