Many young kids are playing sports these days, and while that’s good because of the health benefits, it has also resulted in an increase in the number of injuries among kids participating in sporting activities. The current sport-training paradigm for children focuses on training as intensely as possible. This has become the norm,because many children are involved in multiple teams and competitions, and often have no break during or after the season. This puts them at serious risk of injury during practice, as the muscles are sometimes overused.
3 tips for reducing your child’s chance of injury during training:
1. Enroll your child in a sports program that is run by certified sports trainers. Sports specialists are more knowledgeable about how to prevent injuries, and can ensure that your child is using the right training methods.
2. Insist that your child takes regular breaks during training. This may mean telling the coach or athletics director that you absolutely do not want your child to over-train. Over-working kids during training can lead to strains and sprains, or permanent physical damage.
3. Ensure that your child is outfitted with the proper protective gear for practice. Protective gear must be worn at all times during play,in order to reduce the chance of injury.
