The Benefits of multifocal lenses for cataract sufferers

For patients with cataracts, the clouding of the natural lens of the eye often requires replacement of the lens. Thishas traditionally been done by implantinga synthetic artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens or IOL. These single vision IOLs,have now been excelled by the more advanced multifocal lenses available for cataract sufferers.

Monofocal IOLs

Monofocal IOLs were the normal replacement lens for patients with cataracts. However, since the lens focus on one particular distance – either near or far – patients would still need eyeglasses in order to change the particular focus.

Benefits of Multifocal lens

Multifocal lenses offer several benefits for cataract sufferers. For some, that means being free of glasses, and being able to lead an active lifestyle. These IOLs give patients the flexibility to see at varying distances, with the help of different points of focus.

Multifocal IOLs are built using advanced technology, that incorporates near-powered and distance lenses. This makes it possible to focus on near and distant points at all times. Two of the multifocal lenses often recommended by ophthalmologists are:

  • TECNIS Multifocal lens: The TECNIS Multifocal lens provides adequate viewing distances at all levels and lighting conditions. This allows some patients to be free of glasses.

  • ReSTOR Multifocal lens: These multifocal lens also have very good focusing capability, allowing patients to see clearly, so that they are less dependent on glasses. They are made using patented apodization technology, which creates an improved image quality.
