If you have acne then you already know how frustrating it can be, and of course there are also the acne scars, which are an unwelcome reminder of the pimples you had to deal with. But how can you treat acne scars and get clearer, smoother skin.
How acne scars form
When the outer layer of the skin is damaged by the inflammation caused by acne pimples, the body produces collagen to fix the skin. Scars form during the healing process because the body may produce too much or too little collagen, resulting in uneven skin texture.
How Can I Treat Acne Scars?
You can treat acne scars with laser therapy, specifically fractional laser resurfacing. Fractional laser resurfacing is a non-invasive procedure that creates controlled injury within the dermal layer of the skin. Fractional lasers promote quicker healing of the skin, so there is less recovery time after treatment.
How fractional laser resurfacing treats acne scars
The laser emits a laser beam that divides into thousands of microscopic columns, which target the damaged skin cells that make up the acne scar. During the recovery process new collagen is produced, and this helps to fill in shallow and deep scars.
What happens after the procedure?
Most patients experience mild swelling and redness after fractional laser treatment. There may also be some peeling as the new skin emerges to replace the damaged skin cells. The skin is very sensitive after laser treatment, so patients are advised to use sunscreen to protect it (click here to learn more).
