LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis)eye surgery is a cosmetic procedure that is often necessary to correct refractive vision problems. The main refractive vision disorders include myopia and hyperopia, as well as astigmatism, and LASIK eye surgery options can correct them all. Refractive eye errors occur because the eyes do not bend light correctly. This is due to the abnormal curvature of the cornea, which can be corrected with LASIK surgery.
Lasik surgery involves the use of a specialized excimer laser to reshape the cornea. When the cornea is reshaped, vision becomes more focused, and patients will require less vision help from eyeglasses or contact lenses. In some instances they may not need these vision aids at all.
Lasik eye surgery is performed to correct the following refractive conditions:
- Myopia or nearsightedness. Thisis a condition in which distance objects appear blurry, but near objects are clear. This occurs because images viewed are focused in front of the retina, rather than directly on it. Lasik surgery for myopia removes excess tissue from the center of the cornea, in order to make it flatter.
- Hyperopia or farsightedness. This is a condition in which near objects appear blurry, but images in the distance are clear. During LASIK surgery to correct hyperopia excess tissue is removed from the edge of the cornea, and this makes the cornea steeper, so that it is better able to bend light.
- Astigmatism is a vision disorder in which the cornea is symmetrical instead of dome shaped, and this irregular shape distorts vision. LASIK surgery can reshape the inner layer of the cornea, and this helps patients achieve better vision.
