Chemical peels are a wonderful way to improve the look of your skin, but the idea of putting chemicals on the skin is scary for some people. So it’s important to know what chemicals are used in a chemical peel.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing procedure in which a chemical solution is used to exfoliate the top layers of the skin. Chemical peels refresh the appearance and treat skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and uneven skin tone.
What chemicals are used in a chemical peel?
The most common types of chemicals used in a chemical peel are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and trichloroacetic Acid (TCA).
Alpha hydroxy acids
Alpha hydroxy acids are made from plants and fruit. The most common AHAs are glycolic acid (from sugarcane), and lactic acid (from fermented milk). AHAs make the complexion brighter, and help correct skin issues such as photoaging, acne, and hyperpigmentation.
AHAs are used to perform light, less intensive peels, as they only strip away the outermost skin cells.
Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA)
Trichloroacetic Acid is a type of acetic acid, and is generally used to perform a medium or deep peel. TCA peels are available in different strengths (click here to learn more).
TCA peels can be used to address deep wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars. They also make the skin smoother and softer. The skin is typically red and sensitive after a TCA peel, but the redness normally fades within 3-4 days.
